On utter impulse, on New Year’s Day 2010, Matthew and I bought an RV. Until the moment of seeing it advertised on the side of the road that day, neither of us have even entertained the thought of owning one. We saw the ‘For Sale’ sign on it, called the number listed and bought it, there and then, few questions asked and definitely NO hesitation. Oh, it has been the best buy, impulse or not, we have EVER made! It has brought us so much family fun. We keep it stocked, the cupboards full and the beds made and can set out on an adventure in, literally, 30 minutes. I know it’s kind-of-cheating-camping but, oh boy, it is so wonderfully easy and comfortable.

We have just spent 5 glorious days camping at El Capitan State Beach on the central Californian coast. Wow… this is a beautiful spot. The beaches are wonderful white sand interspersed with rocky shorelines… perfect for enjoying sandy beach fun as well as exploring rock pools and rock climbing. The rocky parts have the most beautiful round, sun-bleached pebbles. So much to see and collect. Dolphins and seals shared the sea with us, so many! And Teddy pointed out hundreds of ‘pterodactyl’ (or, as the rest of us know them, pelicans)

Five days in paradise…

  1. Looks like an amazing and very beautiful trip. We also love camping, but just have a tent (although I am having some serious RV envy right now).

Our favorite place to camp is the Klontaleersee in Switzerland – just down the road for us, but it might be a bit far for you guys!!

  2. I LOVE camping. This year’s annual trip with my babies and my mother in law was postponed due to massive forest fires. We are hoping to make it up to the mountains for a few weeks in the early fall.

Next month my little family is taking our very first ever family vacation all by ourselves. NO friends, parents, sisters. Just us. My husband, and my three kids, and a week in a beach house in San Diego.

    Things to love about summer.

    much love,
    Amanda

  3. How funny, my family and I were just at El Capitan Canyon last week. We stayed in one of the cedar cabins at the canyon, so I guess it wasn’t really camping…we kept on calling it “GLAMping!” They do offer safari tents, as well as yurts…From your pics, it looks like you and your family had a wonderful time!

  4. It may have been bought impulsively, but the RV has brought lots more of treasured and memorable experiences. How many trips have you done with it? Quite sure that each trip is farther, or should I say more adventurous, than the last.
